Different types of wallpaper

Wall coverings come in a variety of different materials, all with a different look and feel.

Vinyl Wallpaper

Vinyl wallpaper is amongst one the most popular as it is one of the most durable and easily maintained. The thicker the vinyl, the more difficult it is to apply to the wall, but the more durable it will be. Vinyl wallpaper can be applied to kitchens and bathrooms due to its resistance to water and steam.

Metal Foil Wallpaper

Metal foil wallpaper has a shiny metallic look. It is highly reflective, so it can highlight defects in the wall. At Soho Painters, we make sure that your wall it up to par before we start applying any wallpaper.

Flock Wallpaper

Flock wallpaper is made a velvet like fibers that give it fuzzy 3-D patterns. Flock wallpaper has the most luxurious look and feel but it very difficult to maintain and clean. It is best for rooms with little traffic like bedrooms.

Mylar Wallpaper

Mylar wallpaper is made of a paper base and has a polyester film on top that gives it a sheen like foiled wallpaper. It also has a tendency to highlight wall defects so care must be taken to ensure that the wall is smooth before application. It can be washed and is most commonly used for kitchens and bathrooms.

Bamboo Wallpaper

Bamboo wallpaper is one of the most unique wall coverings. It is environmentally friendly and each roll will look slightly different from one another. It takes a lot of care to apply as the glue can affect its appearance. It is also not easily washed.

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?

Many of the wallpaper manufacturers and suppliers have a calculator on their website that can tell you how many rolls of a specific wallpaper to get. The main pieces of information you need are the length and width of the walls you want applied, the length of paper in a roll of the selected wallpaper, and the size of the pattern and the length between repeats. It is always order way more than you think you need. Pieces will get cut to fit in certain places and if the length of the remaining wallpaper no longer aligns to the patterns, you will not be able to use the remaining in a seamless roll. In addition, patterns are often discontinued, so you’ll want to have more on hand for repairs later down the road. When you work with us at Soho Painters, we can help you figure out how many rolls you need.

How do you apply wallpaper?

Hanging wallpaper can be quite strenuous, and requires a lot of attention to detail and patience if you want it to look right. Before you start to hang any wallpaper, all the prep must be done to ensure the walls are smooth. Any holes have to be filled and any rough spots have to be smoothed out. Roll on paste to the back of your wallpaper and fold both ends towards the middle to “let it rest.” This allows the adhesive to activate and soften up the wallpaper. Then, apply to the wall and use a smoother to smooth out the wallpaper. Use razors to trim the pieces and be sure to switch out your blades often as they get dull easily and get create a frayed edge. Clean the wallpaper of adhesive with a natural sponge and a little water. Be sure to use a water based adhesive so that it can be easily cleaned. Use a roller along the seams to prevent any future curling.

When you hang wallpaper, you want to minimize the number of seams and hide the seams in inconspicuous locations. Ideally, you would want the seams to be away from where the eye naturally wanders to when you first enter a room.

Applying wallpaper well can take many hours depending on the material and the pattern. There are many tips and tricks of trade depending on the material. It requires a lot of attention to detail and patience if you want it to look right.
